WHAT HAPPENED?

On July 28, 2024, presidential elections were held in Venezuela, in a context marked by uncertainty and controversy. These elections, significant for being the first in 25 years where polls indicated that Chavismo did not have the advantage, generated a series of tumultuous events and accusations of irregularities. Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by the National Electoral Council (CNE), but the opposition, led by figures such as María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, has rejected the results, alleging fraud and arbitrary arrests of opposition leaders (MUNDIARIO) (Univisión). Election day was marked by high citizen participation and strict security measures, including the implementation of Prohibition and border controls. However, the process was criticized for various restrictions that prevented many Venezuelans abroad from voting (MUNDIARIO) (Aristegui Noticias). The international community has expressed concern and some politicians in the United States have called for stronger sanctions against the Maduro regime. Reactions inside and outside the country continue to be discontent and distrust towards the official results (Univision) (Aristegui Noticias).
